The New York Rangers took a huge gamble in their rebuild at the trade deadline last year, and continued that during the offseason. The team moved on from Artemi Panarin, then traded multiple draft picks to acquire winger Pavel Dorofeyev and sign him to a seven-year, $77 million contract, then drafted Alberts Smits with the fifth overall pick. On paper, the Rangers could have rolled with their roster as is, and that's including center Vincent Trocheck, who they floated at the trade deadline. But then, the Utah Mammoth made them an offer they couldn't refuse, which included defenseman Sean Durzi.
Entering the offseason, head coach Mike Sullivan said they needed defensemen who can drive the puck up ice. Durzi fit the bill, which helped them make the tough decision to send Trocheck to the Mammoth. On Sunday, the two teams met in head-to-head action, and the Rangers have the bragging rights.
The Rangers defeated the Mammoth 4-2 to improve to 3-1-0 on the season. Durzi recorded three blocked shots and two giveaways in 22:57 of ice time.
Thus far, the Rangers' addition of Durzi is panning out.
Sean Durzi is shining early in his Rangers tenure
The view at the time of the trade made sense. The Rangers needed a puck-moving defenseman to help out immediately, and a top prospect to replenish their farm system. The Mammoth, meanwhile, needed a veteran forward to help them take that next step into Stanley Cup contention. All it took was for Trocheck to waive his no-movement clause, which he ultimately did despite initially only wanting to remain on the east coast.
President and General Manager Chris Drury and Sullivan were both looking to alter their defensive core. Durzi was part of those plans, where he was basically locked into a second pairing role alongside fellow offseason acquisition Marcus Pettersson. While it is only four games, Durzi has been a positive when he is on the ice.
Through four games this season, Durzi was not on the ice when the opposing team scored. That's a pretty impressive feat for the Rangers. It certainly helps out that they have goalie Igor Shesterkin in net for three of their four games, where he only allowed five goals on 76 shots allowed in three starts.
Durzi also showed off his potential on offense, as he scored his first goal with the team in their 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. In fact, he might have had two goals in that game, had the Rangers not been offsides on his second goal, which was overturned after a challenge from the Red Wings.
As for Trocheck, in his return to Madison Square Garden, was on the ice for three Rangers goals Yet, his line of Clayon Keller and Nick Schmaltz outshot the Rangers 8-5.
Rangers are having the opposite start as opposed to dreadful 2025-26 season
The hope entering this season would be the exact opposite as last years. While it may only be four games into the new campaign, the vibes are much more immaculate, thanks in part to the Rangers' strong start.
The offseaon additions, for the most part, have panned out. Durzi has been a positive presence on the ice defensively and has shown he can help out offensively as well. Dorofeyev is thriving alongside captain J.T. Miller on the second line and has showed off his powerful shot that makes him a true scoring threat. Smits has lived up to his moniker as the most pro-ready prospect in this year's draft, as he has never looked lost when on the ice.
The Rangers' core that has been with the team has done well. Shesterkin is still at the top of his game after suffering an injury last season. Gabe Perreault has shown progress in his development as he's embraced his role on the top line. Alexis Lafreneriere was aggressive offensively, especially against the Mammoth. Miller has is thriving alongside Dorofeyev, and has been more vocal as the captain of the team.
The Rangers face their true test, as they look to finally get their first win against the rival Islanders since the 2024-25 season on Tuesday. Then, on Friday, they face the Washington Capitals and their stacked forward group.
