Sudden Mats Zuccarello free agency drama brilliantly sparks logical Rangers reunion

A reunion with the former fan favorite might be nostalgic, but could serve a much bigger purpose this upcoming season and beyond

As NHL free agency approaches, Mats Zuccarello has emerged as a polarizing free agent target for the New York Rangers.

Some want to see the former fan favorite return to Broadway, while others believe a team focused on getting younger has no business signing a forward who will turn 39 in September.
That's a strong argument, but there are some compelling cases for a reunion with him.

According to The Athletic's Michael Russo, Zuccarello and the Minnesota Wild appear to be trending toward a split, potentially making the veteran winger available on the open market.

Even while battling injuries this past season, Zuccarello remained an effective top-six contributor. His vision and relentless style of play haven't disappeared with age. Much like his time  in New York, Minnesota fans and teammates embraced him.

However, why would a retooling Rangers team have interest?

Dorofeyev changes the equation

Chris Drury tipped his hand when he traded for and signed Pavel Dorofeyev.

Whether fans agree with the direction or not, the Rangers are clearly trying to become competitive again as quickly as possible. That changes how the front office should approach free agency.

Dorofeyev thrived in Vegas alongside some of the NHL's elite playmakers, including Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner and Mark Stone. The Rangers simply don't possess that caliber of distributor on their current roster.

Zuccarello certainly doesn’t rise to that level, but he's still one of the league's more creative passers. He sees the ice exceptionally well and has made a career out of creating offense for his linemates. These traits would heavily benefit Dorofeyev as he transitions into his new home.

The last thing the Rangers need is for questions to arise if their new $11 million man doesn't produce at the same pace he did in Vegas. Surrounding him with another skilled playmaker would only increase his chances of transitioning well to his new team.

Roster construction

Drury's moves this offseason have shown that this isn't a lengthy rebuild. It's a retool aimed at getting back into playoff contention within Fox and Shesterkin’s window.

If that's the approach, then signing Zuccarello actually aligns with the organization's timeline. He wouldn't require a lengthy commitment, and his experience would complement a roster trying to produce more offense.

The Rangers also have the financial flexibility to make a short-term deal work. Even if it requires paying a premium on a one- or two-year contract, it wouldn't significantly impact  their long-term cap outlook.

Adding Zuccarello would also strengthen the top six while allowing other role players like Will Cuylle and Tye Karty to settle into roles that better suit their future on this team instead of force feeding them roles they’re not equipped to handle.

Becoming an attractive destination again

The NHL landscape is changing.

Star players are becoming increasingly willing to use their leverage when organizations fail to build competitive teams around them. Elite talent is placing more pressure on front offices than ever before - exemplified by Zach Werenski, Dylan Larkin and Brady Tkachuk. The Rangers need to position themselves as an organization players want to join.

Drury reportedly pushed hard to acquire Brady Tkachuk but couldn't make New York a realistic destination. Looking ahead, there will be other star players who become available with this new trend.

The Rangers need to prove that they’re serious about winning and build a culture to attract the stars who become available.

A reunion that makes sense

Signing Mats Zuccarello doesn't suddenly turn the Rangers into Stanley Cup contenders, but it creates flexibility to allow Alexis Lafrenière and Gabe Perreault to build upon their late-season connection and pair Dorofeyev with a distributor.

As an added bonus, it reunites the organization with one of its most respected former players without sacrificing long-term flexibility.
