The hilarious reason Igor Shesterkin hasn’t read the Rangers' "Letter 2.0"

While the front office navigates a massive organizational shift, the Rangers' franchise goalie has a much simpler strategy for dealing with the noise.

In a locker room currently defined by trade speculation and uncomfortable questions about the future, Igor Shesterkin continues to be a breath of fresh air. His postgame availability following Saturday’s win over the Pittsburgh Penguins provided a masterclass in deflection, and a a sharp, welcome contrast to the tension surrounding Adam Fox, who recently cast doubt on his own commitment to the franchise's current path. While the team navigates the heavy fallout of "Letter 2.0," Shesterkin’s trademark humor is exactly the kind of palate cleanser this fanbase needs.

Shesterkin didn't read "Letter 2.0"

Via Colin Stephenson of Newsday, Shesterkin kept it brief and blunt: "I am focused on my game. I just play a game at a time, and that's it. Honestly, I didn't read the letter, because I don't speak English."

Shesterkin didn't need to say more. He let his play do the heavy lifting, backstopping the Rangers to a gritty, come-from-behind victory, a win which was just the team's seventh at Madison Square Garden this season.

He is single-handedly stabilizing the crease, putting up back-to-back performances that remind everyone exactly why he is the heart of this roster. He stood tall in Thursday’s overtime loss to Philadelphia, stopping 21 of 24 shots, and followed that by turning aside 31 of 33 in Saturday’s 3-2 shootout victory.

Shesterkin's return has been a calming presence, and he now won 18 games this season while posting a 2.45 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. Thursday's game is one the Rangers probably should have won, although three points in the last two games certainly doesn't help with the long-term plan of getting a quality first-round draft pick.

One wonders when another netminder, preferably Dylan Garand, will get a shot in the crease. If Jonathan Quick is called back into action that might accelerate the unofficial tank, but that mission might be on hold until the trade deadline has passed and the overall makeup of the roster is better fleshed out.

To tie things back to Shesterkin's media availability, it is fair to say that his presence in that area is something the team was missing. He is a fierce competitor, and is very serious about holding himself accountable. That was on full display earlier in the season, and one wonders if that is something that was missing during the team's massive January slide. We will never know for sure, but it clear that Shesterkin is blocking out the noise, and completely focused on being a difference maker for the organization going forward.
