The Blueshirts were in Montreal on Sunday night to take on the Canadiens at the Bell Centre. With the Rangers playing the second half of a back-to-back, back-up goaltender Jonathan Quick was chosen to start in place of regular starter Igor Shesterkin.

Quick has played a long and successful career, winning multiple Stanley Cups, and setting records in the process. The 38-year-old goaltender currently sits at 399 career wins, just one win away from becoming the first U.S.-born goaltender in history to reach 400 wins.

Quick has had a number of chances to reach the milestone, starting in goal for the Rangers against the Washington Capitals on Jan. 4, and against the Dallas Stars on Jan. 7. Unfortunately, the Blueshirts lost both games after leading; being defeated by the Capitals 7-4, and losing a tighter contest to the Stars by a score of 5-4 in overtime.

In his most recent start on Sunday night, the Rangers led the Canadiens on four occasions, but couldn't put the young Habs away. Quick made 32 saves in the — many of which were highlight reel quality- but it wasn't enough as Patrik Laine would net his 12th goal of the season in overtime to earn the Canadiens two points on the night.

There's hesitancy in the hockey world to lay blame at the feet of a goaltender after a loss, and for good reason. There are five players in front of a goalie that the opposition have to get through before getting a shot on goal, but once that shot is taken, it's up to the goaltender to make the save. In the Rangers' last three games with Quick in goal, the Blueshirts are allowing about 35 shots against on average. With such a high volume of shots, it can safely be said that Quick has done his job of giving the Rangers a chance at winning each competition.

There's reason to be hopeful, however, as the Rangers have been playing well since in the new year- earning a record of 6-1-3 in 2025, and improving in a noticeable way on the defensive side of the puck. There's plenty of reason to believe that Quick will get his 400th win any day now, adding another interesting aspect to the fascinating plot that has been the Rangers season thus far.
