The NHL playoffs will not come to MSG, but across junior and college hockey, the Rangers’ next wave is making an immediate impact where it matters most.

As the New York Rangers were officially eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday night, the organization’s youth were just beginning and early postseason play across junior and college hockey have been encouraging.

Several of New York’s prospects opened their respective playoffs in emphatic fashion, playing key roles in decisive wins. Ranger fans have been offered a glimpse of what could eventually help bolster the organization’s depth – and hopefully next competitive window.

Fireworks in Flint

The most eye-popping performance came from Jacob Battaglia, who powered the Flint Firebirds to a dominant 8-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack in Game 1 of their first-round series. Battaglia erupted for six points (2 goals 4 assists) — including a staggering four-point first period that effectively put the game out of reach before it had a chance to settle.

It’s a notable step forward for Battaglia, whose production has been inconsistent this season, including after his trade from the Calgary Flames organization in exchange for Brennan Othmann. With him struggling to meet expectations prior to the deal, Battaglia’s playoff breakout offers a nice reminder of his offensive ceiling — even if his path to the NHL remains an uphill battle.

He wasn’t alone in driving Flint’s offensive output.

Nathan Aspinall, another name Rangers fans have tracked closely this season, continued his strong play with a four-point night (1 goal, 3 assists). The towering 6'7" winger has steadily built momentum throughout his D+2 campaign, and his early playoff performance only reinforces the excitement surrounding his pro transition next season.

While projecting junior production to the professional level always carries uncertainty, Aspinall’s combination of size and improving offensive instincts makes him an exciting addition to the Hartford Wolf Pack pipeline moving forward.

Artemi Panarin trade already bearing fruit

Elsewhere in the Ontario Hockey League playoffs, the Rangers’ newest top prospect, Liam Greentree, made his presence felt for the Windsor Spitfires. Greentree recorded two points (one goal, one assist) in a convincing 4-0 win over the Guelph Storm, continuing what has been a strong finish to his junior career.

For an organization searching for long-term offensive solutions, Greentree’s continued development remains one of the more important storylines. He is expected to make the jump to Hartford next season and figures to be a key piece for the Blueshirts’ future.

NCAA tournament begins

At the college level, EJ Emery continues to quietly solidify his standing as one of the more reliable defensive prospects in the system. Skating for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, Emery picked up an assist in a shutout victory over Merrimack, helping his team advance to the regional final of the NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament.

While his offensive numbers won’t jump off the page, Emery’s impact is in his consistency. He plays heavy minutes in key situations and has established himself as a steady, composed presence on the back end. His mobility, size and efficient first pass has allowed him to drive play in more subtle ways. There are signs of his offensive upside improving, but that’s not his game long term.

With another year in college likely ahead, Emery’s development path will be fun to track.

For a Rangers team entering an uncertain transitional phase, these early playoff performances offer a welcome shift in focus. The organization’s prospect pool may still lack elite, high-end depth, but contributions like these highlight the importance of patience, along with the value of growth internally.

There is still significant work to be done before the Rangers become a true contender again, but for now, the youth movement is providing fans a reason to stay engaged moving forward.
