Tuesday night will feature a match-up between the visiting Dallas Stars, and the New York Rangers. The Blueshirts have been on a multi-month slide, posting a record of 6-16-0 in their last 22 games dating back to November 21st. Since the calendar switched to 2025, however, the Rangers have won two of three games and are looking to make it three of four against the Stars.

When the Stars and Rangers met in Dallas on December 20th, New York came away with a rare victory, beating the Stars 3-1 on their home ice thanks in large part due to the play of Igor Shesterkin, who made 41 saves on the night.

With the Rangers looking to collect another win, let's take a look at what they need to do on Tuesday night to best Dallas.

Solid Goaltending

Starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been out injured since the Rangers 5-3 defeat in Florida on December 30th. In his place, veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick stepped in for the Blueshirts match-up with the Boston Bruins on January 2nd, and made 32 saves in a closely contested 2-1 Rangers win at Madison Square Garden. Just two days later, though, Quick would allow six goals on 27 shots in Washington in a 7-4 loss to the Metropolitan Division-leading Capitals.

The Stars have averaged over three goals per game so far this season and if the Rangers hope to defeat them tonight, they'll need their goaltending to step up and perform at a high level.

Power Play Success

Despite scoring more as of late, the Rangers have struggled on the power play in 2025, going 0-for-5 on the man advantage in their games against Boston, Washington, and Chicago.

In past seasons, and even earlier in their current campaign, the Rangers have enjoyed immense success on the power play. During the Blueshirts recent struggles, however, the power play has gone quiet- a phenomenon that significantly increases the difficulty of winning hockey games in the NHL. Even one power play goal could go a long way in helping the Rangers earn a point or two against the Stars.

Chytil Staying Hot

Filip Chytil has been heating up lately- tallying five points (four goals, one assist) in his last four games. In the Rangers 6-2 victory over the Blackhawks on Sunday, Chytil continued his strong run of form, finding the back of the net twice.

Even after all of his injury troubles, Chytil still plays a fast-paced and hard-nosed brand of hockey that often results in impressive offensive output that has the potential to flip a game on it's head for the Rangers. If Chytil can keep us his recent quality of play heading into the Rangers contest with Dallas, there's a good chance he can contribute to another big Blueshirts win.
