San Jose Sharks
Of the three teams mentioned here, this is probably the most unlikely of the three. On the West Coast, a long way away from his wife should she remain in New York to complete her residency in the city, San Jose works more from a hockey perspective than a hockey one. San Jose's defense needs some work, and a leader for that promising young team they have, as well as insulating a few of their younger guys until they are ready, makes some sense.
San Jose is another team swimming in cap space, so they might be more open to taking Trouba on. They're always willing to take on contracts if the situation is right, as we saw with the controversial way the Sharks acquired former Ranger forward Barclay Goodrow. They're in the midst of a rebuild, and taking on back contracts is something Mike Grier has been open to in the Bay Area.
If the Sharks wanted to send a contract the other way, or even a couple that make up a similar cap hit but aren't completely invested into one position, the Rangers might be able to find more value and a way to get out from that deal than they are with Trouba. San Jose doesn't have any retention slots currently, but next season, when they do, they'd also have the option of flipping Trouba.
Overall, there's a consensus that the Rangers need to move on from their captain. That contract is tough, and the Rangers need a fresh start away from the Michigander. Wherever he ends up, the Rangers would be better off not retaining him on that deal. It's a difficult situation, and only time will give us a resolution to this problem.
