If the 2024-25 New York Rangers had to be described in one word other than "disappointing," one could correctly call the team "stagnant." Despite acquiring Will Borgen and J.T. Miller in seperate trades, New York's play has not improved enough to be considered a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. General manager Chris Drury will be tasked with swapping out pieces that do not fit the puzzle with pieces that he believes will. There are three skaters that should be moved regardless of what direction Drury decides to take the team.
Reilly Smith
After being acquired in an off-season trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins, Smith has had an up-and-down tenure as a Ranger. After being a staple of the team's top six forward group at the start of the season, he has often been demoted to the bottom six or even relegated to the press box since. The team gave up a package that included a future second round pick to acquire Smith. Given his history as a proven playoff performer, a contending team might give up a slightly less valuable pick if the Rangers were willing to retain part of his current $3.75 million cap hit.
Ryan Lindgren
Lindgren has been a key contributor for the Rangers over the past handful of years. Providing the defensive ying to Adam Fox's offensive yang, their partnership has been amongst the most consistent in the NHL. Numerous injuries have seemingly caught up to Lindgren, as he has struggled this season. His decline in the defensive zone has been noticeable, and his offensive contributions continue to be negligible. With his contract expiring at season's end, the Rangers would be wise to recoup value while they can. Due to his tough reputation and willingless to do the "dirty work" in the defensive zone, there is a chance the team could get valuable assets back despite his dip in productivity.
Jimmy Vesey
Vesey is a player who might already have one foot out the door. Despite being reinserted into the lineup due to poor play from Arthur Kaliyev and an injury to Adam Edstrom, the veteran forward has publicly worried about his future with the organization. During his second stint with the Rangers, he has been a reliable penalty killer and depth piece. His price would likely be a late-round pick. With young players such as Brett Berard waiting for an opportunity, moving on from Vesey could be beneficial for both sides.
