Vincent Trocheck has been one of the New York Rangers most important players since joining the team, and his initial usage at the 2026 Winter Olympics with Team USA is something that he's not accustomed to. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing for the Rangers' alternate captain, and his ability to remain efficient, productive, and take a role that is a bit of a challenge certainly reflects on his background of doing whatever it takes to help his team win.
Trocheck logged fewest minutes among Team USA skaters vs. Latvia
Trocheck is an absolute workhorse back in New York, and so far he's averaged 20:57 per game as part of the Rangers' top six. He's appeared in 43 games to this point, and his 12 goals, 24 assists, and 36 points place him third on the team in points. During Team USA's 5-1 victory over Latvia, Trocheck skated 9:11, and that was the fewest minutes on the team. For context, Quinn Hughes led defenders with 21:29, and Jack Eichel led forwards with 18:13. Fellow Ranger J.T. Miller had 12:12 in the win, and Jack Hughes skated 11:14.
Hockey players are creatures of habit, and part of having success is getting into a rhythm and flow. Although he's not a prolific scorer, Trocheck is a player who has always played a lot of minutes, and he's averaged 19:18 a game up to this point in his career. Having a regular distribution of minutes helps you get a feel for the game, and it makes it easier to produce.
Sitting on the benches for extended periods can make you a bit stiff, and even though you are well rested, you can feel like you are moving a step slower than your opponent. That didn't appear to be the case on Thursday for Trocheck, as he picked up an assist on Brock Nelson's goal in the second period which just happened to be the game-winning goal.
Trocheck's role is a funny contradiction
In some ways, Trocheck's current role at the Olympics is a bit of funny contradiction. The NHL's trade deadline is coming up, and right now he's projected to be top target on the market. His ability to log big minutes, contribute on special teams, win faceoffs, play with grit, and success in the playoffs makes him the perfect piece for a contending team to add for depth. But in some ways that just speaks to Trocheck's value, in that he's being put in an interesting position with Team USA, and he's going to make the most of the opportunities that are afforded to him. That level of dedication and buy in is important, and reinforces why Trocheck is such a sought after player.
