Conor Sheary officially has a NHL tryout with the New York Rangers.

As announced on Friday, the left winger was signed by the Rangers to a PTO. This move reunited him with his former head coach and new head coach for the Blueshirts, Mike Sullivan. Sheary became a free agent on July 1st after the Tampa Bay Lightning put him on waivers for the purpose of a buyout with one season remaining on his contract ($6 million featuring $2 million AAV on July 1, 2023).

As previously written by Blue Line Station's Tom Urtz Jr., Sheary spent the majority of the 2024-25 season in the American Hockey League with the Syracuse Crunch (20 goals, 41 assists, and 61 points in 59 games).

What's important to know about Conor Sheary?

For New York Rangers fans, interest in Sheary could be high as the Rangers do not provide professional tryouts as often as other franchises; In 2023, they offered zero ahead of training camp.

Here's some important information on Sheary for the fans to take in:

New York has been searching for additions to bolster the depth of its bottom-six forward group. He'll be competing with the likes of Brett Berard and Brennan Othmann as well as some other possible players from the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack

In 593 career NHL games throughout 10 NHL seasons, Sheary has scored 124 goals and recorded 267 points.

The 5'8", 182 pound player also has 23 points in 72 playoff appearances, with his most productive postseason runs coming in 2016 and 2017 under Sullivan, when he helped the Penguins capture back-to-back Stanley Cup titles.

Those years with Sullivan are significant and this move comes after the Rangers' new head coach — following Peter Laviolette's termination — brought in two assistant coaches (David Quinn and Ty Hennes) over from Pittsburgh.

It appears Sullivan is looking to bring over some players now as well, but it's up to Sheary to see just how far he'll take this opportunity.
