With J.T. Miller back in the fold for the New York Rangers and Filip Chytil gone, the Rangers have holes to fill on their roster. Where does J.T. Miller fit with the team? This forward core is already undergoing a shakeup, and the forward is returning to New York. He can play center and wing, so the flexibility with which Peter Laviolette can run his forward core should let the Rangers find a winning recipe. So, where should Miller slide?
Immediately, his best position is probably through the middle on the top line. Vincent Trocheck is a great player, but Miller is the Rangers' best centerman now. Let him play there with Alexis Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin, and let him be the player he is. That line will win games, but there is the issue of how that line would perform defensively. It's an option, but maybe that's not where the Rangers should start with Miller.
What if the Rangers put Miller back with his old linemates? Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider are still in New York and need help getting back into the flow of things. You can start Miller off the right wing and see if that line can kick Mika and Kreids into gear. However, that opens up a hole down the middle, so the Rangers would need to find another 3C. That's not an excellent fit for the present.
Well, how about a straight swap for Chytil? Having Miller through the middle would be great, but the Rangers would push Mika Zibanejad into the bottom six. That's a problem, and the Rangers cannot justify the price of having Mika's contract in the bottom six. However, the Rangers need to find something to get this team going, so we'll see what the Rangers do to get the roster going.
