The day before the NHL Trade Deadline was quite busy for the New York Rangers. In addition to trading Reilly Smith for Brendan Brisson, the Rangers also gave up a 2025 third-round pick in exchange for Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy.
The third-round pick in the deal is the prior of two Rangers third-round picks. It was originally the San Jose Sharks’ pick and was acquired by the Rangers on Thursday from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Reilly Smith. There is no salary retention involved in the trade.

But, who is Carson Soucy?
Soucy has had a tough season and has been a healthy scratch at points, but he’s been a productive player in the past and played on a pair with now-Rangers-teammate Will Borgen in Seattle. On the season so far, Soucy has 10 points across three goals, seven assists and 59 game appearances.
The Rangers could put Soucy with Adam Fox (upper-body injury) when the top defenseman is healthy, or head coach Peter Laviolette could choose instead to move K’Andre Miller up to the top pair and reunite Soucy with Borgen.

The 30-year-old defenseman performed well for the Canucks and Seattle Kraken in the postseason the past couple of years and can play well on both sides of the ice. The Alberta, Canada native has one year left on his contract after this one with a $3.25 million cap hit.
He's also quite the physical player, putting up dominant hits that even rival current Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe — given Soucy's size of 6'5" and weighing 208 pounds.
Prior to entering the league Soucy was a fifth-round pick (No. 137) of the Minnesota Wild in the 2013 NHL Draft. He played four seasons for the University of Minnesota Duluth before signing a two-year contract with the Wild on April 11, 2017 and reporting to Iowa of the American Hockey League.
While this trade certainly isn't the most flashy, it does in fact add to the Blueshirt roster.
