New York Rangers: Two in Two for Oscar Lindberg

facebooktwitterreddit

Oscar Lindberg is already proving why he deserves a spot on this New York Rangers lineup, and if he continues this early-season form, we could be seeing a great season from the young rookie.

After a great preseason, Lindberg deservedly made the Rangers roster, and after only two games, he is already rewarding his team with goals.

Two nights ago when the Chicago Blackhawks raised the Stanley Cup banner, it proved to be a tough opening-game for the Rangers, but they were there to spoil the party; and spoil it they did.

Lindberg scored his first NHL goal, on his first shot of the season, after just 1 minute and 43 seconds into the game, and gave the Rangers an early confidence boost that would then help them win the game.

As a reward for his great start to the season, Lindberg deservedly recieved the Broadway Hat. This was only Lindberg’s second career NHL game, and he rose to the occasion extremely well, especially against a team like the Chicago Blackhawks.

Last night, against the

Columbus Blue Jackets

, he made it two in two.

J.T. Miller

made a great move to keep the play alive in the offensive zone, and Lindberg was there to pick up the pieces. He slots one home past

Sergi Bobrovsky

to tie the game late in the third period.

There are many positives to take from these first two games, one of them being how well Lindberg is playing with his new linemates. That line of J.T. Miller, Oscar Lindberg and Viktor Stalberg is already showing what it can do, and has arguably been the best line for the Rangers so far. It will certainly look to continue their dominance when the Rangers take on the Blue Jackets tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Those people that have already seen Lindberg in action with the Hartford Wolf Pack, already knew that he was a talented player. The 2014-15 season was a great year for Lindberg, in which he scored 28 goals, and added 28 assists, as well as scoring three goals, and gaining 13 assists for them in their Playoff run.

I mentioned in an article a few months ago, that I thought Lindberg could be a great addition to the Rangers squad if he gets his fair chance of ice time, and that hasn’t changed. He is showing what he can bring to this team who arguably needed some new offensive presence after losing the likes of Martin St. Louis and Carl Hagelin.

  • Now, even though he has had two great games as of yet, nobody should be putting unreal expectations on Lindberg, he is still a young forward who is new to the NHL. But with his skill set, and his great ability of being able to move the puck efficiently, if Alain Vigneault continues to ease him into this tough league, and reward him with more ice time for his efforts, then he will certainly be allowed to pickup more points in upcoming matches because of it.

Teammate goaltender Henrik Lundqvist also made a comment on Lindberg’s performance from these past two games in a postmatch interview after the Rangers defeated the Blue Jackets 4-2. He said:

“I think ever since hes been around here in camp the last couple of years, I’ve noticed how smart he is with the puck, but this year I feel like the way he can shoot the puck, the way he can read a goalie, he’s really good infront of the net and he showed it the last two games, he can put the puck in the net and I think that line has been extremely good in these two games. The speed they have, the smartness, that’s a strength to have; a line like that stepping up so early in the season.”

We are only seeing a piece of what the Rangers have in Lindberg, and there is definitely more to come.
