The New York Rangers came away with two points, and extended their winning streak to eight games with a shootout win in Ottawa this afternoon.

In a tight checking affair, where both teams kept the other in check, the Blueshirts were able to overcome the difficulties the Senators defense was able to put on the ice.

Final. 1. 91. 2. 95

To open the scoring, Chris “The Kraken” Kreider scored his third goal of the season on the power play. A quick one-timer from Kevin Hayes on the blue line off a feed from Keith Yandle made the scoring chance possible.

Earlier in the sequence, Kreider, who has been stepping up his game recently scoring four points in his past five games, was stung on the ankle by a previous shot from Yandle. But, the former Boston College created the traffic in front of Senators net and reaped the rewards of hanging around the net.

Later that period, the game would be tied thanks to Senators captain Erik Karlsson, who took advantage of a fallen Ryan McDonagh when he tried to join the play on the penalty kill. That chance led to four-on-one odd-man rush for Ottawa, which was capitalized on with quick passing.

The game would remain tied for the rest of regulation, with both teams exchanging scoring chances and sound defensive play.

A couple of highlights were headed by Henrik Lundqvist, who was made 22 of 23 shots in the game. There was a sequence of him keeping the puck out on repeated chances. It was another jaw-dropping moment, if you were a Rangers fan.

Mats Zuccarello, who played another solid game for the Rangers, delivered his own brand of punishment on Senators forward Kyle Turris in the third period.

Just chalk it up as Zucc being Zucc.

A scary moment in the game occurred with less than five minutes left in the second. Derek Stepan was the receipient of a shoulder to the jaw from Senators player Zack Smith. Stepan had to be taken to the locker room for evaluation. However, Kreider came to his defense and challenged Smith in retaliation.

Unfortunately, he would see the locker room for the rest of the period, and unable to return to the game till around seven-minutes remaining in the game.

Hopefully, the Department of Players Safety will take a look at the play, and determine applicable punishment to Smith, who appeared to have the intention of aiming for Stepan’s upper-body.

After both teams were deadlocked at one goal a piece in regulation and overtime, the shootout made an appearance to determine the victor.

The Rangers Zuccarello and Dan Boyle were able to score, combined with Lundqvist’s saves in two of the three rounds, that equals an extra point for the Blueshirts.

Here’s how the shootout unfolded:

For Boyle, it was extra special, as he grew up in Ottawa and was able to capitalize on his homecoming.

The team’s winning streak is now at eight games, and seem to have found their stride as a group.

New York is right back at it tomorrow night, as they play the Toronto Maple Leafs at home for a second time. The last time they played, the Rangers won 3-1 back on October 30th.
