New York Rangers Daily Dose: Who Will Be the Boston Bruins’ Backup Goalie

Ahhh Saturday. Know what would go great with this Saturday? How about some hockey talk, New York Rangers fans?

Jonas Gustavsson to Try Out for the Bruins – NHL.com

Former Detroit Red Wings goalie, Jonas Gustavsson, will be fighting for a spot on the Boston Bruins‘ roster, right behind their main goalie, Tuukka Rask.

The 30-year-old may have a hard time making his case. He had a shortened season last year due to injuries, posting a .911 save percentage and 2.56 goals against average over seven games. There’s not much to go on from that and his stats were slightly worse in the previous season when he played 27 games.

Plus, Gustavsson will be in direct competition with prospect Malcolm SubbanP.K. Subban‘s younger brother who is the favorite in the running.

The younger Subban, 21, has already played in one game with the Bruins. However, he sustained a .500 SV% and 5.81 GAA. Judging from that alone, the Bruins may want to keep Subban in the AHL for further development while Gustavsson fills in on the NHL roster.

To add to that, Subban recorded a .921 SV% and a 2.44 GAA in 35 games with the Providence Bruins last season, which isn’t half bad. For comparison’s sake, Rask’s stats last year were a .922 SV% and a 2.30 GAA, but that was in the NHL of course. It just seems that Subban needs a little more time before he can make the jump to the NHL roster.

So who knows who the New York Rangers might be seeing if Rask can’t take his place on the blue paint.

Florida Panthers to Visit the Dominican Republic – Florida Panthers

When it comes to community outreach, the Florida Panthers are killin it.

Forward Vincent Trocheck and alum Randy Moller will be heading down to Santo Domingo to hold a street hockey clinic, September 8-10. They’ll visit King’s School where 75-100 students will have the opportunity to learn pro tips from the best in the game, well sans ice. The organization will also be visiting patients at CURE Hospital.

This is not the first time the Panthers have extended their youth hockey initiative outside of North America. In the past, they have gone to the Bahamas and Puerto Rico twice.

It’s all thanks to the team’s official airline, JetBlue, whose Regional Marketing Manager said, “We’re committed to giving back to the communities we serve. We’re the largest airline in the Dominican Republic and we’re continuing to grow in South Florida. It’s important to us to provide assistance on a local level in all our cities.” Good stuff, JetBlue.

And that’s all for the dose today. Make sure to come back tomorrow for Sunday’s edition.
