New York Rangers’ Pavel Buchnevich Earning Spot in Lineup
In a recent stretch, New York Rangers’ rookie Pavel Buchnevich has been played on the fourth line, scratched, and demoted to the AHL. Meanwhile, Jimmy Vesey played on the second line. Following a shakeup of the lines, Buchnevich is proving he has belonged in the top nine the whole time.
Pavel Buchnevich has had a tumultuous rookie season in the NHL. After a blazing start, he missed 32 games to injury. In the time that he missed, his spot on a line with Rick Nash and Mika Zibanejad was held by many different forwards. (That is, when the rest of that line was healthy as well)
One of the aforementioned forwards was fellow rookie Jimmy Vesey. Throughout the season, Vesey has looked like a much more polished, two-way player compared to Buchnevich. However, Buchnevich is a much better offensive player.

Following his return from injury, Buchnevich played on the fourth line, producing nothing remotely close to his early season total. Vesey, on the other hand, continued his play in the top six. The situation was curious because Vesey wasn’t producing at a high level either.
Buchnevich showed that he deserved his top six roster spot from the start after his scratches and demotion. In his only game with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Buchnevich scored two goals and an assist, obviously outclassing his opposition. In his first game returning to the lineup, he scored a beautiful goal to put the Rangers ahead.

Since that game, Buchnevich has reclaimed his early season spot playing with Nash and Zibanejad. In just the same time span, both his play and his confidence has picked up. He is passing the puck well, stickhandling as smoothly as ever, and shooting the puck from anywhere in the offensive zone.
Vesey has been demoted to play on the fourth line with Oscar Lindberg and Tanner Glass. However, Vesey has taken it in stride and that is a testament to the type of player that Vesey is. Vesey is a much better two-way player who has shown a bit of edge in his game. Even in his limited game time, Vesey makes the Rangers’ lineup better.
