NEW YORK, NY – FEBRUARY 25: Ryan Spooner /

Up: Ryan Spooner

The new guy in town has been exceptional in his first few games as a Ranger.

Ryan Spooner had a whirlwind of a Sunday. In the morning, he was dealt to New York in the Rick Nash trade and played his first game that night. It also happened to be Jean Ratelle night in which his number 19 was retired, leaving Spooner to make his debut under the spotlight. He managed to deliver and put up two assists on the night.

The next night, against the Vancouver Canucks, Spooner had three assists for five points in two games aiding the Rangers in snapping their seven games losing streak. Against the Calgary Flames, he notched another two points with a goal and an assist, making him the first player in franchise history to have six assists in his first three games.

Considering Spooner had barely any transition time, he was able to slide right into the lineup and be productive. He particularly has chemistry with new linemate Kevin Hayes. He has assisted on all of his goals in the previous two games.

There is one issue with Spooner; he is an upcoming restricted free agent at the end of this season and is due for a new contract. His current cap hit is $2.825 million per season. At 26, he is probably looking at a long-term deal. I am a bit hesitant with giving him a long-term deal as he will have only played a month in Rangers’ blue. However, I would be open to giving him a 1-2 year deal to see if he’s the real deal. .
