Down (and out): Ryan Spooner

Farewell Ryan Spooner, we hardly knew ye.

This week, Ryan Spooner makes his final appearance on the Stock Market. On November 16, Ryan Spooner was shipped across the border to Edmonton in exchange for forward Ryan Strome.

Spooner was acquired at the trade deadline last year from Boston in a deal that saw Rick Nash sent the other way. In his short time in New York last season, Spooner was quite productive, especially playing with Kevin Hayes.

To start this season, however, Spooner has struggled. In 16 games played, he has just one goal and one assist. When he was on the ice, he was completely nonproductive in every sense of the word, ultimately leading to him being traded.

As for the trade, it’s best for both players. Both have just one goal and one assist, meaning both have started the season struggling. A change of scenery is probably what both Spooner and Strome needed.

Regarding Spooner’s place on the Rangers, the trade was probably best for him playing time wise. With so many forwards in the Rangers system, there are a plethora of young players waiting to take his place. The second you start underperforming, you lose your spot, and that’s what happened to Spooner. Ultimately, what we can hope for is that a change of scenery and different linemates will cause a resurgence in Strome, and make him part of the Rangers’ future.
