Notes on the game

  • The New York Rangers are now 28-32-13 this season.
  • The last time the Rangers missed the playoffs two years in a row was before the lockout of 2004-05.  They missed the playoffs seven years in a row from 1997 to 2004.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are 44-25-5 this year.
  • Tonight’s win was only the second in their last 13 games for the New York Rangers.
  • The Rangers were outshot 45-28 – Alexander Georgiev now has 99 saves on his last 101 shots faced against Toronto.
  • New York didn’t fare particularly well in the faceoff circle, winning 40 percent of their draws compared to Toronto’s 60 percent.
  • Both teams went 0-3 on the power play
  • The Rangers have now only given up four goals on the power play in their last 11 games.
  • Brendan Smith drew two penalties on Saturday night and he now leads the Rangers in drawn penalties with 20 this season.
  • The Rangers out hit the Maple Leafs 28-16 and also blocked more shots, 33-13.
  • Pavel Buchnevich now has six goals in his last 10 games – he has 18 goals and 14 assists for 32 points in 57 games this season.
  • Ryan Strome’s overtime winner was his 14th goal of the season and he now has four goals in his last seven games.
  • Strome has 25 points since being acquired by the Rangers from the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 16 – which puts him second in the most points by an in-season acquisition. Ryan’s brother, Dylan tops the list with 44 since his trade to the Chicago Blackhawks.
  • Boo Nieves got 13:19 of ice time and he used his blistering speed to great effect to get the helper on the game winner – his 5th assist and 9th point of the year for the Rangers.
  • Zach Hyman scored his 19th goal of the season – a career high. He has 35 points in 64 games this year.
  • Lias Andersson got 11:40 of ice time, Brendan Lemieux had 15:29 and Vinni Lettieri got 12:31 as a number of Rangers stepped up to the plate with added responsibility.
  • Chris Krieder sat out with a lower-body injury, the first game he has missed this season. Jesper Fast also sat out but Marc Staal and Boo Nieves returned to the line-up.
