Notes on the game

  • Chris Kreider show some rust in his return from injury, but he played a dynamic physical game.  He needs one more goal to equal his career high of 28.,
  • This was the seventh time Georgiev has faced 40 shots or more in a game.  He made some amazing saves including a point blank shot by Vince Dunn in the slot in the third period.
  • The Rangers took only one penalty and it wasn’t for too many men on the ice.
  • Jimmy Vesey also ended a goal drought, scoring his first goal this month after 13 scoreless games.
  • The Rangers had a good night on faceoffs, winning 55%.  They were led by Zibanejad who won 10 of 16.
  • Even though the Blues lost, they were able to clinch a playoff spot when Arizona lost to Nashville.
  • This was the 18th home win for the Rangers.  The last time they had as few as 18 home wins was in 2009-10.
  • If you don’t think the Blues dominated this game, consider this, the Blues had 26 high danger scoring chances compared to 11 for the Rangers.
  • Marc Staal returned to the lineup, meaning Fredrik Claesson rode the bench again. He led the team with six hits.
  • Vlad Tarasenko was an offensive machine. He scored the first Blues goal and ended up with nine shot attempts and six shots on goal.
  • The Blues are quite a story. St. Louis was dead last in the NHL on January 3 and are now in the playoffs.  According to Elliotte Friedman that’s the latest any team has been last overall and still made the playoffs since the 1997 Ottawa Senators (last place on January 26).
