Integral pieces of the defense

The New York Rangers used three of their picks in the 2019 NHL draft on defensemen, selecting Matthew Robertson (# 49), Zachary Jones (# 68) and Hunter Skinner (# 112). If you add those in with some of the great picks the Rangers made in 2018, notably first round picks K’Andre Miller (# 22), Nils Lundkvist (# 28) and third round pick Jacob Ragnarsson (#70) the last two drafts have already boosted the future depth of the Rangers defensive core.

When you look at the Rangers defensive prospects that will be looking to make the team in the upcoming two seasons, you have names such as Tarmo Reunanen, Sean Day, Ryan Lindgren, Yegor Rykov and Joey Keane. The Rangers have stockpiled their defense the last few years and while some of these prospects could be used in trades, others will be looking to fill the voids when the contracts of Marc Staal and Brendan Smith expire in two years.

The upcoming 2019/20 season will feature some new faces on the blue line including Jacob Trouba who recently signed a seven year deal with the NHL club and heralded rookie Adam Fox who will look to secure full-time spot with the team.
