It was another crazy Sunday afternoon at The Garden as the New York Rangers lost in a shootout in more ways than one to the Florida Panthers.

With the game a designated Kids Day, the next generation of New York Rangers fans were certainly given a tantalizing taste of why this sport is so great.

It was a contest that literally had almost everything as both the Blueshirts and the Panthers went toe-to-toe in an exhilarating showdown, like two heavyweight boxers slugging it out.

Ryan Lindgren had an afternoon to remember after potting his first ever career goal in the NHL, and that started a truly bonkers chain of events.

After Aleksander Barkov and Dominic Toninato had flipped the matchup on its head in a matter of seconds at the end of the first period, the game truly exploded in the second.

There were a total of six goals, yes six, scored in a breathtaking middle frame as the two teams traded blows at a furious rate.

More from Blue Line Station

Filip Chytil continued his resurgence with his fourth goal in six games before Evgenii Dadonov finished off a superb power play move for the Panthers.

Brady Skjei responded to being a healthy scratch in the previous game in the perfect fashion after getting on the board, while Kaapo Kakko fever filled MSG once again after the Finnish phenom continued his maturation with a neat power play goal.

Frank Vatrano kept the Panthers alive after being fed by Dadonov, with the Panthers’ top line of Barkov, Dadonov and Jonathan Huberdeau contributing six points in total.

There was still time for one more goal in an already action-packed period, too, with Chris Kreider doing what he does best after tipping a Adam Fox shot beyond Sam Montembeault for the go-ahead goal.

However, there was more drama in the works as two former Rangers combined to ensure the game went to overtime with Brian Boyle redirecting Keith Yandle‘s shot from the point past Henrik Lundqvist.

After neither team could find the clinical touch in overtime, a Sunday matinee thriller was to be decided by a shootout and it was won by the Florida Panthers thanks to Vincent Trocheck, despite Kakko pulling off some filthy moves to convert his effort.

It was a tough game to drop for the Rangers who were ultimately punished for going run and gun with an offensively stacked team.

And, on that note, let’s delve into our main takeaways from the New York Rangers’ 6-5 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers…
