Notes on the game

Artemi Panarin continues to play at a level above his teammates.  He added two assists and now has 21 points and a ten game point scoring streak, the longest of his career. He played a team high 22:07, was plus three and took six shots.  Vasilevskiy stopped him on a wicked one-timer from the left circle in the third period.

  • Micheal Haley only played 4:02, fewest of any Ranger.  Lias Andersson had 11:44 minutes, second lowest.
  • Jacob  Trouba left midway through the second period with an upper body injury, but after the game Quinn sounded optimistic that he would play Saturday.

The Rangers took 55 minutes in penalties, compared to 37 for the Lightning.   That included two ten minute misconducts for Haley and a ten minute misconduct to Brendan Lemieux.  Quinn wasn’t happy about the lack of discipline. “we have to do a better job of controlling ourselves…with our frustration level…we didn’t do a good job at all with that tonight. Obviously, we get the five on three… (it) really opened the floodgates. Whether I agree with the call or not, it did put us down five on three and it may sound crazy when you lose 9-3., but when you’re down 1-0 and you keep playing maybe the game takes on a different dynamic.”

Some players would definitely have found themselves in the “Quinn Bin,” but he was a victim of the numbers game. “We had to play people because of the numbers and I would have liked to (have) sat some guys for their actions, but I didn’t want to put our other players in jeopardy and we have the game to play on Saturday so I didn’t want to overload certain guys.”

Filip Chytil now has six goals in eight games. Last season it took him 33 games to get to the six goal mark.

Chris Kreider came to the defense of Panarin after he was checked by Tampa tough guy

    Erik Cernak

.  Good move by the veteran in a 4-1 game.

Kevin Shattenkirk now has five goals in 16 games with Tampa.  He had seven goals in 119 games as a New York Ranger. He had a goal and an assist in this game after being held scoreless in the game at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers took their first too many men on the ice penalty.  They had 14 too many men penalties last season, so this is an improvement.

Tampa won 58% of the faceoffs. Chytil was best on the team with seven wins out of 12.

Georgiev ended up giving up five goals on 26 shots.  Lundqvist gave up four goals on 19 shots.  The last time Lundqvist came on in relief was February 9, 2018 when he replaced Ondrej Pavlec and backstopped the Blueshirts to a come from behind 4-3 victory.

The Lightning had 41 shot attempts to 24 for the Rangers at even strength. Each team had the same number of high danger scoring chances.  It was special teams that did in the Rangers in this game.

Chytil’s first goal was credited with the Rangers’ fourth shorthanded goal of the season.  Last season they had seven all season and five the season before.  Only one thing…the Rangers weren’t shorthanded when he scored.  They’ll change it.

Nikita Kucherov finished with a goal and three assists, the second time this season he has had four points in a game.

They named Shattenkirk the third star of the game…a move that sure looked like they were sticking it to the Rangers.  There were at least three other Lightning players who were as deserving as Shattenkirk.

Kaapo Kakko missed the game with the flu.  It definitely looked like he wasn’t the only player with the flu on the team.
