Could they lose him?

No one has raised this option, but his representation has to be considering it. The Rangers have until August 15, 2021 to get him under contract or risk losing him.  That’s how Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey became free agents.

An NHL team has four years to sign a player after drafting him, so long as he remains in college the entire time. When the player graduates, the CBA rules are that the NHL team retains his rights until August 15 that summer.  Barron would fall into this category if he returned for his senior year.

The Rangers have until August 15, 2021 to get him under contract or risk losing him.

One thing that is striking is that in numerous interviews, Barron hasn’t spoken much about a desire to become a Blueshirt.  All of his quotes are about Cornell and his immediate future.  Two weeks ago he told the New York Post  “Obviously, where I feel I’m at with hockey is going to be a big one, whether I’m able to jump in and make an impact at the pro level or whether I could use one more season in college. … My education is a big thing, I went to Cornell because I wanted to graduate and I need to figure out if that’s going to be a possibility if I leave.”

He added “And like I said, I wanted to go to Cornell to win a national championship. That’s something that’s always going to be in the back of my mind while making this decision.”

When asked by The Athletic about the Rangers he said  “I think (the Rangers) are pretty much on the same page as me and the coaching staff here at Cornell in that they don’t want any of that stuff about next year to influence my season in any way. They’re just letting me play my hockey here and we’ll figure that all out after.”

This week he spoke to Vince Mercogliano of LoHud about his contact with the Blueshirts say that they “put their offer out and talked to me a little bit about where they think I’m at.”

A Reddit post mentioned that the Halifax native grew up a fan of the Rangers, though on the Blueshirts’ website he listed Toronto and New York sports teams as favorites. Face it, unlike Adam Fox, he hasn’t spent his life dreaming to play for the Rangers.
