New York Rangers’ 3 biggest bargains
By Derek McAdam
3. Ryan Strome
After registering two points in 18 games for Edmonton, Strome was sent to New York in exchange for Ryan Spooner. It was a trade of two players who were struggling to produce and the hope was that a change of scenery could help both players. Strome benefited from the change, and Spooner is currently playing in Switzerland.
In what could be considered a “comeback year” for Strome, he certainly made the best of his 2019-20 season. In 70 games, Strome has a career-high 59 points, scoring 18 goals and registering 41 assists.
What makes it look even better for the Rangers is the fact that he put up those numbers for only $3.1 million, a contract inherited from the Oilers.
Did Artemi Panarin have a major part in Strome’s success since they were linemates? There is no doubt about it, the Breadman makes everyone on his line look like All-Stars.
But Strome also showed potential in his first year as a Rangers, scoring 18 goals and assisting on 15 for 33 points over a 63 game span in the 2018-19 season. All he needed was a dominant winger, and he got just that in Panarin.
After this season, Strome will be an arbitration-eligible RFA and he will be an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) when his next contract ends. While he is a bargain at $3.1 million, he is set to receive a nice raise, but that is to be expected with the season he had.
