Notes on the game:

As noted, Buchnevich was the first Ranger to get a hat trick on his birthday.  He became the 14th NHL player to do it. Viktor Arvidsson did it just nine days ago.<

It was the first hat trick of Buchnevich’s career and the fifth by a Ranger this season. That’s the most in one season since the Rangers had five in 82 games in 2010-11.

With the hat trick, Buchnevich now leads the team in goals with 19.

Igor Shesterkin had his shutout streak against the Devils ended at 199:33.  That set a franchise record, breaking Dave Kerr’s streak of 198:07 against Montreal in the 1939-40 season.

It also ended Shesterkin’s overall shutout streak at 152:37, the fourth longest in franchise history for a rookie and the longest since the NHL allowed forward passing in all three zones in 1929.<

Artemi Panarin played a brilliant game, with a goal and three assists.  On the first goal, Panarin forced the turnover in center ice and got the puck to Mika Zibanejad who broke in with Buchnevich who scored.  Panarin was actually sitting on the bench when Buchnevich scored, though he got the assist,

Panarin is the hottest Ranger with eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in his last 10 games.  He has now moved into second place in the NHL averaging 1.52 points per game , behind only Connor McDavid who is first with 1.64.

Chris Kreider scored the sixth and last goal into an empty net. It was his first goal in 10 games and his first even strength goal in 18 games.  After the game David Quinn spoke about Kreider’s streaky goal scoring and was hopeful the empty netter would get him started.

When Quinn said that the Rangers were outplayed much of the game he wasn’t kidding. The Devils had 60 shots attempts at even strength to only 38 for the Rangers.  29 of them got through to Shesterkin with eight of them the high danger type.  The Rangers had 21 shots on goals at even strength.

The Rangers outshot the Devils 16-9 in the first period, but were outshot 24-14 the rest of the game.

The Devils mounted their comeback, scoring against the top six and the fourth line.   They totally dominated a four on four in the third period.

David Quinn rolled four lines again with no Rangers forward totaling more than Mika Zibanejad’s 19:41 minutes.  Adam Fox led all skaters with 25:04 minutes of ice time.
