New York Rangers: Looking at a few more prospects
LW Brennan Othmann
We briefly discussed Brennan Othmann in on last piece, but he warrants more praise. He was drafted 16th overall by the Rangers during this year’s NHL Entry Draft. With the OHL season cancelled, he played in the Swiss League with EHC Olten. He raised his value as a prospect there, as he scored seven goals and had 16 points in 34 games. He also played with an aggressive nature, as evidenced by his 64 penalty minutes. At 6’0″ and 175 pounds, he is another taller prospect for the Rangers. Keep in mind, he is still an 18-year-old kid and should be able to add on a little more weight easily.
Overall, that is a strong season for a young player getting his first real taste of professional hockey. It was a season that was entirely unexpected, as he had 17 goals and 33 points in 55 games with the Flint Firebirds the year before. That is not necessarily bad, but not many people would have envisioned him becoming a first-round pick just a year later.
It will be interesting to see just how much Othmann is able to improve. He’s been noted for not only his skill, but also his intense forechecking and overall physicality. If he can contribute more offensively as he matures, he could be a fantastic addition for the Rangers later down the road. Like Cuylle, he also fits into the tougher identity the Rangers are aiming to build. However, Othmann will be able to provide more than just that.
