In an unfortunate series of events for the New York Rangers, the Rangers suffered a 5-4 loss to the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
Worst of all, it denied goaltender Jonathan Quick his 400th career win and took place in New York's own Madison Square Garden.
Let's breakdown exactly how the Rangers got their latest loss with four key takeaways from the matchup.
1. Artemi Panarin's Three Assist First Period
Artemi Panarin tallied three assists in the first period, the most in a period by a Ranger since Adam Fox on Feb. 15, 2024 versus Montreal. Since the 2008-9 season, on only eight occasions has a Blueshirts skater recorded as many.
He assisted every single goal the Rangers score, two of which were scored by Alexis Lafreniere.
2. Blowing the Lead
Despite holding a 3-0 in as early as the first period — the Rangers still lost in overtime.
As we said on Twitter/X, that was the Rangers season in a nutshell. Strong start, shaky defensively, but capitalizing on the chances they had when the opponents couldn’t. Then, the Rangers proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot, and blowing the game. It’s so frustrating.
3. Filip Chytil Injury
After logging one shot on goal, Filip Chytil was not on the bench. His last shift ended with 4:00 remaining in the second period. As a result, Vincent Trocheck took his shift between rookie Brett Berard and Will Cuylle.
According to the New York Rangers PR Department, he did not return due to an upper-body injury.
With teammates Chris Kreider and Igor Shesterkin already on injured reserve — the last thing the Rangers need is another injured player.
4. Matt Rempe Eligible for Play
22-year-old forward and enforcer Matt Rempe elbowed and boarded Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen during New York’s 3-1 win in December. He was given a game misconduct for the play. The NHL Department of Player Safety Rempe for eight games as a result.
While he was previously sent back down to Hartford — since Kreider was placed on IR, Rempe was recalled. Meaning, the 6'9", 255 pound player has now served all necessary games of his suspension and will be eligible for play in Thursday's matchup against New Jersey.
