Are the New York Rangers playoff-worthy? Rangers fans share in their disgust after the loss to Calgary Flames.

Blue Line Station's own Hannah Eng was onsite at Madison Square Garden Tuesday night talking to various members of the New York Rangers's fan base. Here's her own account on how the Rangers disappointed their fans in their showing against Calgary, making them think there's no hope for a wildcard spot.

After the New York Rangers lost to the Calgary Flames, with two straight losses, some Blueshirt fans have lost hope for this season. The Rangers were simply unable to connect and score. Not only that, but they were outshot almost three times by the Flames.

After attending the match for my own eyes, I — Hannah Eng — stayed back and interviewed fans exiting Madison Square Garden about their experience and what their reactions were.

A disappointing game for fans

"Embarrassing," "disgusting," "discouraging," and "sad" are just a few words that were used by fans to describe the performance of the Rangers against the Flames. According to their fan base, the Rangers seemed to have no drive and couldn’t connect as a team.

It was an unfortunate loss for the Rangers at Madison Square Garden against the Flames. The Rangers recently lost to another Canadian team, the Edmonton Oilers. Hopes were high for the Rangers because they were in the second wildcard spot, but not anymore. After this game, they moved to third position. Who will say if they keep moving down or have a miraculous turnaround?

Here’s what fans had to say to Blue Line Station about the Ranger's execution.

"
There’s always another chance… We need more heart."
Chase, NY Rangers fan
"After tonight, I’m not really expecting much… Their defense, as always, is like Swiss Cheese; it’s got holes everywhere."
Kyle, NY Rangers fan
"Start hitting."
Sokratis, NY Rangers fan
"After tonight, I’m done with any hope for the playoffs. It’s over … You can’t score if you don’t shoot."
Steve, NY Rangers fan
"That’s not a playoff team out there … It was disgusting to watch."
Greg, NY Rangers fan
"More heart."
Matt, NY Rangers fan

Overall, fans realized the team needed more heart, drive, and shots on goal. They said the bodies were there, but there was no heart. They need better hockey. Rangers must up their drive, launch their motivation, and give it their absolute best.

One player held the team's sanity during this brutal game: star goaltender Igor Shesterkin. The amount of shots on goal that Shesterkin had to deflect was preposterous. Shesterkin made a whopping 33 saves in total. He wasn’t just a goalie for this game; Shesterkin defended his net religiously and played defense and goalie. And yet despite his efforts, Shesterkin's defense was nowhere to be found.

It’s a sign that it was a disappointing game if fans boo at the team as the timer for the third period comes to an end. Ranger fans are very loyal and keep it real. Fans screamed at the Rangers to “shoot the puck.” Players must not have heard them because only 13 shots were made by the end of the matchup — when angry fans signaled their disapproval.

When a shot was made, barely one puck went in the net clearly because the Rangers only got one goal in this game, which was in the first period. 35 shots on goal for the Flames compared to a dismal 13 for the Rangers. The second and third periods were hauntingly void of any Ranger goals.

It’s almost as if the team forgot they were wearing blue.

Rangers know that they are not meeting expectations; they need to get their act together and play as a team. Make the shots you need to make, take shots when you can, help the goalie, and win some games. The fans are losing hope; only the team can restore that hope. Seriously, they need to play like they are a part of the NHL because they are. So, can they prove it?

Hannah Eng will be onsite for Thursday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs interviewing fans once again. For the Rangers sake, hopefully they play better and their fanbase will have better things to share.
