Quick's Season At a Glance
Following a disappointing 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday, the New York Rangers traveled to Detroit for their third and final meeting of the season with the Red Wings. Going into the contest, goaltender Quick boasted a 2-0-0 record, a .938 save percentage, and a 1.50 goals against average in games started this season.
The 38-year-old's previous starts on the year came against the Anaheim Ducks on October 26th, and the Detroit Red Wings on October 17th. During his first two starts Quick proved to still be a more than capable backup for the Rangers, winning a close game against Anaheim by a score of 2-1, and weathering offensive storms in the 5-2 Rangers win over the Red Wings.
A Masterclass In Detroit
After a sloppy and uninspired performance on Thursday, it was important that the Rangers come out with energy and fight in Detroit. It seemed, however, that Rangers fans may have been in for another rough night, as just 20 seconds into the first period, Detroit's Alex DeBrincat had a quality scoring chance off the rush.
Quick set the tone for the evening as he slid across the crease making an impressive lateral save to prevent the Rangers from going behind in the first minute of the game, as they did on Thursday.
The Red Wings would carry the momentum through most of the evening, having a majority of possession, leading to a number of high danger chances. Quick was up to the task on every occasion, especially in the second period, when the Red Wings outshot the Rangers 19-8.
When all was said and done, the Rangers had taken advantage of their opportunities and managed to score four goals, while Quick stood on his head to make 37 saves, earning the 396th win and 61st shutout win of his NHL career.
Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette spoke about Quick's performance following the game.
""He got tested quite a bit in the second period and he made big save after big save, that was really good... He came in and gave us a really solid performance""Peter Laviolette
Quick proved once again Saturday night that he is an elite goaltender and an imperative piece of the New York Rangers identity. His 37 saves in the Rangers 4-0 win was the definition of a bend but don't break mentality, something that championship teams have coded into their DNA.
