What a season for the NY Rangers, who, at times, seemed to take a backseat to some of the league’s elite teams. But in the end, they clinched the best overall points total in the NHL, won the Presidents' Trophy, and, with it, became the top overall seed in the 2024 NHL Playoffs, putting them in a prime position to win their first Stanley Cup since 1994.

But if they plan on winning it all, the Rangers must win four rounds in what will be a talented playoff field. And the postseason hasn’t been kind to Presidents’ Trophy winners lately, as the Rangers, believe it or not, were the last Presidents’ Trophy recipients to even earn a trip to the Conference Finals.

With that in mind, the Blueshirts will look to change things, starting in the First Round of the postseason. So, who are their opponents, when does the series begin, and how can you tune in?

Who are the NY Rangers playing in Round 1 of the NHL Playoffs?

The Rangers will begin their playoff odyssey against the Washington Capitals. While the Caps finished the season with a minus-37 goal differential, everyone knows they can’t take this team lightly. Alex Ovechkin has come on strong lately, and goaltender Charlie Lindgren has been lights out in the net.

The Rangers also split their season series 2-2-0 against the Capitals, earning a total of four points. That alone should motivate this team that just because they won the Presidents’ Trophy and are playing the bottom seed, it won’t be an easy matchup.

When do the Rangers play?

The Rangers and Capitals will kick off their playoff series on April 21st at 3:00 PM, and the subsequent games are as follows:

What to watch for

Last season, the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Boston Bruins found themselves stunned in the First Round in what was a memorable seven-game series. The Rangers will look to ensure that streak doesn’t extend another season, and that the recipient will at least see their playoff lives extended to the Second Round.
