The New York Rangers added many new players to their roster this offseason as they continue their retool.
After missing the playoffs in back-to-back years, the Rangers are hoping to be more competitive in 2026-27. They made this clear with the moves that they have made this offseason, as their depth looks stronger on paper.
Yet, when looking at all of the new additions the Rangers brought in this offseason, one specific player could very well be the piece that helps carry them to the playoffs: Sean Durzi.
The Rangers acquired Durzi as part of the trade that sent center Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth. While Trocheck was the biggest name from this trade, the acquisition of Durzi should not be ignored. He has the potential to be a real difference-maker for the Rangers.
When looking at the Rangers' current roster, there is a very good chance that Durzi will slot on their second pairing with fellow newcomer Marcus Pettersson. In addition, due to his puck-moving ability, he should receive a good amount of playing time. With this, he is a defenseman whom the Rangers are certainly going to rely on this upcoming season.
If Durzi ends up being a true answer for the Rangers' top four, it would undoubtedly increase their odds of making the playoffs next year. The Rangers need him to be a significant upgrade over defenseman Will Borgen, who was traded by New York to the Boston Bruins earlier this summer. When looking at Durzi's past success, he has the potential to be that.
Sean Durzi could hit a new level with the Rangers
With Durzi likely to have a notable role with the Rangers, the possibility of him hitting a new level with them next season should not be ruled out. He has shown during his career that he can be an impactful offensive defenseman, and he could benefit from getting this fresh start with New York.
In 60 games last season for the Mammoth, Durzi posted five goals and 27 points. Overall, these are solid numbers, but he has shown in the past that he can be an even better. For example, during the 2023-24 season with the Arizona Coyotes, he scored nine goals and set career highs with 32 assists and 41 points.
If Durzi can get back to these totals or produce even more offense, he could be the player who helps New York get back to being a playoff team. It will be very interesting to see what happens on that front.
