They started it, now the Islanders may help to finish it.

It was announced that the 2015-2016 New York Islanders hockey season would not include their signature cheerleaders. Instead, the team is opting the more serious approach, especially with high hopes of them competing for a championship.

With their move to the Barclay’s Center this upcoming season and their recent success, general manager Garth Snow and company may have decided that they need to be taken seriously moving forward, and omitted the affair.

Instead, it is reported they will institute a coed ice crew, and the clothing will be of ‘proper’ team attire.

The Islanders were the first to incorporate cheerleaders into their home games, back in 2001. With the team struggling in the standings and attendance, management decided to be the pioneer in this team promotion, something that was most-commonly associated with NFL and NBA teams.

It seems, the Islanders have had enough and are prepared to move forward, by washing away the past.

Hockey fans, get ready. The next generation of the NHL are just as anxious as you are for the season to start.

September brings a beginning of all things hockey-related. And, it appears to be starting with this year’s rookies. For two days, the NHL Players Association held an event called the Rookie Showcase.

In it, they invited close to 40 players that represented the future of the NHL. Among them was first and second selections of this past NHL Entry Draft, Connor McDavid (EDM) and Jack Eichel (BUF).

The showcase is in it’s seventh year and is more like a public relations tool for the media to get to know the young prospects and rookies.

Noah Hanifin, the fifth overall selection of the Carolina Hurricanes said it best:

"I’m getting really antsy…There’s been a lot of off time, a lot of talking. Just being at the draft, the combine and everything, it’s all kind of for one thing and that’s to play in the NHL. It’s pretty close now. I’m getting really excited just to go to camp"

It’s the last hurrah for the players, before they go their separate ways and join their respective organizations. Next time they meet, it will be business.

So why not have some fun?

And that’s today’s edition. Stop by tomorrow to find out what’s new around the NHL.

Talk to you all later!
