New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today — Friday, Sept. 27 — that the club has assigned goaltender Talyn Boyko to the American Hockey League’s Hartford Wolf Pack.
The Wolf Pack’s 2024 training camp begins on Sunday, Sept. 29. Boyko becomes the second goaltender of the Rangers training camp roster to be cut and placed on the AHL affiliate, with Hugo Ollas coming before him during the first round of cuts. Goaltenders Louis Domingue, Dylan Garand, Jonathan Quick and Igor Shesterkin remain on the roster.
Domingue and Quick shared the net most recently on Thursday, Sept. 26, during the Rangers' third preseason game of the year. The pair helped held the Boston Bruins' offense off for a 5-2 win.
Before turning pro, Boyko appeared in 142 Western Hockey League games, posting a 56-67-9 record with a .899 save percentage, 3.55 goals against average, and six shutouts with the Kelowna Rockets and Tri-City Americans.
The Canadian, 21-years-old, appeared in 26 games as a rookie with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones in 2023-24. He posted a record of 13-9-1 with an .888 save percentage and 3.42 goals against average. He made his AHL debut in Game 1 of the 2024 Atlantic Division Finals for the Wolf Pack, playing 8:59 in relief against the Hershey Bears.
In addition to cutting Ollas, the Rangers further reduced their training camp roster by 14 other players previously, when they made their first cuts. Eleven of those players were assigned to Hartford — including Maxim Barbashev, Carter Berger, Brett Budgell, Jonny Evans, Blake Hillman, Blade Jenkins, Case McCarthy, Blake McLaughlin, Jake Murray, Chase Pauls, and Ryan Siedem.
Boyko is simply the latest addition to the list.
The Rangers next preseason game is Monday, Sept. 30 against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center. The game serves as the start of a home-and-home set that concludes Tuesday at The Garden between two of the more exciting teams in the league.
The Wolf Pack will open the home portion of their 2024-25 schedule on Friday, Oct. 18, at the XL Center against the Springfield Thunderbirds; puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
